Rare portrait miniature of HRH William Duke of Cumberland

Ref: MS_DCM1£595

Rare and interesting portrait miniature of HRH Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, 1721-1765, after a stipple engraving titled “His Royal Highness, William, Duke of Cumberland, commander in chief of the forces acting against the rebels in the year 1745” by John Chapman, published in 1798, probably contemporary, in and oval gilt metal frame, with fine inner decorated ormolu mount, and glazed.

The Duke of Cumberland, third son of King George II, uncle of King George III, a controversial general, often referred to as “Butcher Cumberland”, after the Battle of Culloden, 1746.

Frame and miniature are in good condition for age. There are signs of dust and dirt inside and small scratch to the glass in left side.
